There was a Training Workshop was organized by FACT with financial support of Forum Syd and ICCO, held for three days from August 10-12, 2010, at the Institute of Foreign Languages with participation of 42 people including 15 female from three various areas (Coastal, Mekong and Tonle Sap region).

The workshop mainly focused on roles of gender core persons, law, human rights, economic and culture related to gender concept, what factors affecting women in participating of gender fishery community, Factors of Gender, Differences between Gender and Sex, gender integration into fishery community.

About 160,000 hectares of the flooded forest surrounding the Tonle Sap lake have been destroyed by commercial rice farming operations in the past five years, including vital fish habitat areas, officials said Tuesday.

Tonle Sap Authority Secretary General Chan Yuttha said a comparison of aerial photographs from 2005 and 2010 indicated that out of a total of 700,000 hectares of flooded forest, 160,000 hectares or bout 20 percent had been lost in the six provinces surrounding the Tonle Sap.

Most of the flooded forest destruction occurred in Kompong Thom, Siem Teap and Kompong Chhnang province, where businessmen have undertaken large scale land conversions for commercial rice farming, Mr Yuttha said.

This programme focuses on strengthening a coalition and network of NGOs around Tonle Sap, Coastal, and Mekong provinces through promoting a collective working culture among NGOs. It will also help for advocacy to improve small fishers? rights of access to and control over fishery resources through our NGOs coalition?s research finding, and supports the formation of the community fisher networks into the Assembly of the Cambodian Fishers. Furthermore, this program also monitors projects funded by ADB around Tonle Sap Lake (Monitoring Asian Development Bank projects around Tonle Sap Lake). Since 1998, the ADB has commenced its investment plan for Tonle Sap development including physical infrastructure construction. Local communities and NGOs are concerned about the potential negative impacts to the environment and their livelihoods from some ADB projects.
